Hope in Haringey are proud to announce the publication of it’s latest research report, “Identifying Challenges Young People in Haringey Face in Finding Work and Accessing Mental Health Support and Diversionary Programmes.” Ahead of its 2025 – 2026 Annual Report
By Omar Alleyne-Lawler, Mentoring and Engagements Manager
Better investigating the realities many young people in our borough face every day, Hope in Haringey’s Research Officer, Cuba Douglas Jean-Marie has reviewed local and national data to explore three, interconnected areas that have a significant impact on young people’s lives: employment, mental health, and access to positive diversionary opportunities.
The findings reveal a borough full of talent and potential, yet one where many young people continue to navigate significant barriers. The report highlights levels of youth unemployment, educational inequality, and ongoing challenges in accessing meaningful work opportunities. For many young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds (which make up much of Haringey’s demography), securing employment remains an uphill struggle.
Mental health access also emerged as another key theme. While Haringey hosts a range of dedicated support services, the report identifies demand outpacing supply. With increasing wait times and funding constraints, there is a concern surrounding the borough’s long-term ability to meet the needs of young people where support is needed most.
The research also explores the importance of diversionary programmes. Demonstrating how positive activities can play a vital role in helping young people build confidence and develop skills, the report showcases a belief that when young people are given opportunities to belong, contribute, and succeed, both individuals and communities benefit.
As an organisation rooted in Tottenham that is committed to serving young people across the borough, Hope in Haringey believes it is essential that its programmes continue to evolve in response to genuine need.
Importantly, the report also highlights the incredible work already taking place across Haringey. Local authorities, schools, charities, faith groups, community organisations, and dedicated professionals are working tirelessly to support young people. While challenges remain, there is also reason for optimism. The strength of partnership working and community commitment gives HiH confidence that change is possible.
